The Ministry of Agriculture through the Indonesian Center for Agricultural Biotechnology and Genetic Resource Research and Development (ICABIOGRD) will soon implement rice data management through the DOI system. The Ministry of Agriculture through the Agricultural Research and Development Agency (IAARD) in collaboration with FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization), took part in the training with the aim of introducing the DOI system in managing rice data.
DOI can be used as an identification for large databases in various fields. Digital Object Identifier (DOI) is a permanent identifier that is used to identify an object in the form of an electronic document. This identifier is given uniquely and can be used to place detailed records. DOI provides links using the internet using a URL (Uniform Resource Locator). The Head of ICABIOGRAD, Mastur revealed that the rice varieties in the world amounted to more than 90,000 so that it would need to utilize the DOI system.
This activity is the result of the Benefit Sharing Fund (BSF) from ITPGRFA (International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture) and Indonesia is also one of the countries that play an active role. Each participant made a rice database repair before registering for a new DOI, then registering DOI for rice data through the provided GLIS toolkit. The result is that the rice data from each participant has registered with DOI and that data can be used together for the purposes of rice research and development.
